The Savanna

REGIONS:

A savanna is a  grassland which consists of several shrubs and isolated trees. All year round, savannas have warm temperature, although there are two very distinct seasons in the biome; a dry season (winter) and a wet season (summer). In the dry season only an average of about 4 inches of rain falls and in between December and February, no rain will fall at all. In the summer, however, there will be an ample amount of rain. Many large grass-eating mammals (herbivores) can survive in the biome because they can move around and eat the plentiful grasses. There are also lots of carnivores (meat eaters) who eat them in turn. An interesting aspect of the biome is that plants have adapted to growing for long periods in standing water. The capybara and marsh deer have adapted themselves to a semi-aquatic life. Most of the animals on the savanna have long legs or wings to be able to go on long migrations. Many burrow under ground to avoid the heat or raise their young. The savanna has a large diversity of specialized plants and animals and they all depend on the each other to keep the environment in balance and survive, a concept referred to as interdependence.
